چکیده

Droop models of nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction with intratrophic predation of zooplankton are introduced and investigated. The models proposed in this study are open ecosystems which include both a constant and a periodic input nutrient models. A simple stochastic model mimics a randomly varying nutrient input is also presented. For the deterministic models it is shown analytically that intratrophic predation has no effect on the global asymptotic dynamics of the systems if either one of the populations has a negative growth rate. Numerical simulations are also used to investigate the effects of intratrophic predation. Unlike the deterministic models for which both populations can coexist with each other if populations’ net growth rates are positive, plankton populations can become extinct if the input nutrient concentration is modeled randomly.

A nutrient-prey-predator model with intratrophic predation

A simple food chain which consists of nutrient, prey and predator with intratrophic predation of the predator is proposed and analyzed. The dynamics of the model depend on the basic reproductive numbers of the prey and predator. Intratrophic predation can have impact on the system only if the basic reproductive number of the predator is greater than 1. In this case, the system may have multiple...

The importance of the form of the quota curve and control of non-limiting nutrient transport in phytoplankton models

The description of phytoplankton growth and nutrient acquisition plays a pivotal role in affecting the performance of plankton ecosystem models. A comparison was made between the behaviour of multi-nutrient phytoplankton models with alternative descriptions of the relationships between the nutrient:C quota and growth rate (m) and for the control of the transport of the non-limiting nutrient. Us...

Oscillations in plankton models with nutrient recycling.

Plankton--nutrient interaction models with both instantaneous and delayed nutrient recycling are considered. The system consists of three components: autotrophic phytoplankton, herbivorous zooplankton and dissolved limiting nutrient. Local stability of the equilibria is analysed. It is shown that the positive equilibrium loses its stability when the nutrient input concentration passes through a...

Estuarine classification and response to nitrogen loading: Insights from simple ecological models

Estuaries exhibit a large range in their responses to nitrogen loadings determined in part by characteristics of the driver, such as magnitude and frequency, but also by such intrinsic characteristics as physical/chemical factors (e.g., depth, volume, hypsometry, salinity, turbidity) and biological factors (e.g., nature of ecological communities, trophic interactions). To address the richness o...

Persistence and coexistence in zooplankton-phytoplankton-nutrient models with instantaneous nutrient recycling

We consider plankton-nutrient interaction models consisting of phytoplankton, herbivorous zooplankton and dissolved limiting nutrient with general nutrient uptake functions and instantaneous nutrient recycling. For the model with constant nutrient input and different constant washout rates, conditions for boundedness of the solutions, existence and stability of non-negative equilibria, as well ...
